Windscreen Repair

Windscreen Repairs are for the repair of laminated glass only. You do not need to determine if the windscreen is laminated, if it is chipped or cracked it must be laminated, the older toughened windscreen does not chip; it shatters into thousands of pieces. The repair process works by injecting a liquid acrylic resin into the damaged glass. The resin is cured by the use of long wave ultra violet light.

Most new windscreens are made of laminated glass this is two pieces of glass permanently bonded together by a plastic membrane in the middle. If something hits a laminated windscreen, like a flying stone, the glass will not shatter into tiny pieces because the damaged area sticks to the plastic membrane, this is what makes a repair possible. Repair can only be carried out on laminated screen such as the car windscreen. Damaged on the outside sheet of a windscreen can be repaired with our professional repair system and our experience and well trained technician.

The repair is carried out by thoroughly cleaning the damage then creating a vacuum over it in order to draw in an ultraviolet light sensitive resin. The resin is then set by exposing it to an ultraviolet light source. Once set the resin has a similar refractive index to glass and the damage will be far less apparent, it is also waterproof and permanent, halting further deterioration. To repair a windscreen properly takes a high degree of skill and patience, not to mention experience. The secret is to ensure that the resin flows into the full depth of the cracks. Many repairers try to pump or force the resin into the break, but because there is air in the break, this prevents the resin getting to the all important ends of the cracks to prevent them spreading. We use a vacuum pump to remove the air from the break so that the resin is 'sucked' fully into the full depth of the damage, minimising the risk of the crack spreading. The next diagram shows how a repair should be performed. The resin is shown as blue, though is of course clear in reality.

We can repair small cracks and chips on the surface of your windscreen, which means that you save your money by avoiding the replacement of the screen. It is important that the repair is carried out as soon as possible so as to avoid dirt and moisture penetrating into the damage. If the repair is not attended to sooner or later the damage will expand and replacement of the windscreen will be necessary.

Limitations

The following types of damage cannot be repaired:

Damage that extends to both layers of glass.
Damage to the internal layer of the windscreen.
Damage to the PVB layer of the windscreen such as dirt ingress or delamination.

Windscreen glass is not recyclable!

Most people think 'glass is glass', and that all windscreens that are replaced will be recycled into new windscreens. This is not the case. A windscreen is made of laminated glass - this means that the windscreen will not 'shatter' if it is involved in an impact incident. It also means that it will not be recycled when removed from the vehicle. Laminated glass also won’t 'break down' or decompose over time (although research is being done to establish ways to separate the glass from the plastic and recycle both). A windscreen dumped in our landfills will remain there forever. There is also a large energy cost incurred in the manufacture of a windscreen. Thousands of windscreens, which can be repaired, are removed unnecessarily from vehicles every year. Extending the life of a windscreen saves energy and resources.

Warranty

Mechanix provides all service with LIFE TIME WARRANTY after your repair except crack lines which period of ONE (1) year of warranty. We will repair the same damage for FREE, if the repaired area does not retain its optical clarity or damage further. However, cracks above 6 inches are not entitled to this guarantee. We will repair the damaged area in the windscreen. It will look 70% to 90% better and will not spread further.

In any event, in case of crack spreading or windscreen damaging while the repair is taking place, we will not be liable for any form of damage. This is because the windscreen is already damaged and the company is only trying to repair this damaged windscreen.

Please be assured that we will take all necessary precautions to prevent such occurrence. However, the chances of this happen is 1 out of 5,000 units. No charges shall be imposed if such damage does occur.

In event that the customer request any of our staff to drive his/her vehicle to our workshop for repair and returning it, our company will not liable for any damages to the vehicle during this journey.
